How to Tie In New Roof with Existing Roof

Posted in Tips & Tricks, Videos    |    No Comments

In this video we show you how to tie in an existing roof with a new roof to avoid any future leaks or issues, putting you back where you started.

The roof I am working on in this project is a 4ply built up system with gravel on it. What you need to do is create a centerline, an area where the new roof is going to start. Chip away the existing gravel, exposing the stone underneath. If you don’t remove the stone, and you put new roof over it, the water will get underneath the gravel, so make sure you clear it away, but don’t damage the felt. Create a 5 or 6 inch gap, and then you are ready to tie in the new roof!

Roofing Tips: How to Heat Weld Membrane Seams

Legacy Flat Roofing & Sheet Metal How To Video: Heat Welding Seams

On a residential home it’s always best to avoid using torches or hot asphalt. So our main practice is to use a technique of using intense heat to weld seams together. To do this you need a leister gun, which blows hot air, and a 3 inch roller. And we use the heat and the roller to adhere to capsheet layers together.

If you are doing this right you will see some of the asphalt ‘bleed’ out the side of the capsheet which means you are getting a watertight seal. If you don’t have that bleeding you will get water coming back in underneath.

We quoted a repair job on a 4 bay mechanic’s shop in East London (check out that video here).

This job was a big one, but we were up for the challenge! We removed the existing roof, and installed a two play modified roofing system.

After struggling for two years to get constant leaks under control, the owner now has a worry free quality roof, thanks to Legacy Flat Roofing & Sheet Metal.

Check out the video of the project here.

Midas Building: New EPDM Flat Roof Installation

A few weeks ago on our video found HERE we quoted a brand new roof, and the client agreed to our quote.

This was a 3-4 day project, around 40 squares, in the East End of London, and for this project we wanted to try a brand new system called EPDM, which is a Single Ply Membrane.

To get to the new roof installation we had to remove the existing fibreboard and felt by cutting it out, and also a ton of pooled water! Take a look at the job though, we know that the client is going to be happy. New roof, new flashing, new lease on life for a flat roof that was in poor condition.

Church Re-Roof: London Ontario (North End)

Our latest client is a congregation that just purchased a building in the North End of London, who were looking to get their flat roof leaks fixed before they went inside to finish the interior work during the winter.

This job involved putting a new seal around a gondola that the congregation had put in, their request to us was to make it leak proof. We put in a half inch fibreboard, and tied it into the existing roof so there wouldn’t be any further leaks. We finished it off with hot asphalt for water proof barrier and seal.

There was also a roof expansion joint that needed to be resealed as there were leaks all along the expansion. We took out the gravel, primed the area and installed a new cap sheet.

Another satisfied customer! Check out the photos of our project here.

This client was experience a huge amount of leaks each time it rained. Due to the amount of leaks we couldn’t recommend a patch work job, which is typically the cheapest. We normally do our best to make sure the client always gets the most bang for buck when it comes to a roof, but we also believe strongly in quality trouble free roofs.
